Painting three ways - projects from Woman's Day magazine
Give your kids’ imaginations a workout with these down-to-earth ideas from Gem Adams
What you’ll need: Resene testpot paints, dry leaves, twigs flowers, paint brushes, cardboard and scissors.
Task your kids with finding leaves, flowers, twigs and other natural objects around your backyard or neighbourhood that match the colours on a homemade colour wheel. To make the wheel, measure out a ring on a piece of cardboard, cut it out and paint it in a white like Resene Alabaster. Then select your testpot paints, guided by hues you see in nature. Our colours, starting clockwise from top: Resene Quarter Bokara Grey, Resene Dynamite, Resene Ayers Rock, Resene Moccasin, Resene Cleopatra, Resene Waiouru, Resene Bubble N Squeak, Resene Wishing Well, Resene Safehaven, Resene RSVP and Resene Memory Lane.
What you’ll need: Resene testpot paints, paint brushes, walnuts and knife.
Draw up your animal ideas on paper, then have an adult carefully crack some clean walnuts in half – start with a knife at the soft end and carefully work it down. Give the walnuts an undercoat with a white base, like Resene White Pointer. We chose Resene Sambuca and Resene White Pointer for the hedgehog, Resene Pohutukawa for the ladybird, Resene Quarter Bokara grey for the mouse and Resene Half Spanish White for the rabbit. Once the base layer is dried, use a small brush to paint the details. We used Resene Alabaster and Resene Nero, as well as Resene Shabby Chic on the rabbit and mouse.
What you’ll need: Resene testpot paints, leaves and paint brushes.
Head out into your backyard, neighbourhood or local park and collect a variety of interesting leaves. If they’re a bit curly, pop them in between sheets of baking paper and flatten them in a heavy book overnight. Then simply allow your imagination to take over. Do you see a cat? A bird? A fish? Or maybe a stingray or an unidentified deep sea creature?
Use Resene Alabaster and Resene Nero to add eyes, fins, mouths, whiskers –whatever you like!
