Craft with Resene, from the Australian Women's Weekly
You’ll never forget those important shopping items or appointments with these write-on boards. Useful and decorative, they look great in any kitchen!
What you'll need: Chopping board with handle, sandpaper (120 grit), pencil, ruler, removable masking tape, Resene testpot paints. I used: Resene Vermont, Resene Bardot, Resene Moonlight, Resene Meditation, Resene Freelance, Resene White, Resene Write-on Wall Paint Kit. Resene testpot paintbrush and a fine-tipped brush for painting the details, twine.
Resene Write-on Wall Paint is designed to produce a whiteboard effect, so you can simply wipe the boards clean, ready for the next list of reminders.
Give your chopping board a thorough sand to remove any surface coating that might prevent the paint adhering well. Wipe clean.
Using a pencil and ruler, draw a design of your choice on the board. Straight lines of contrasting colours are the easiest to achieve. Use masking tape to separate each section of your design and to provide nice, straight lines (see pics below).
Decide which Resene paint colour you want the main part of your board to be. This is where you’ll write your notes, so choose a colour that will allow black whiteboard marker to be read clearly. (If you really want a darker colour, you’ll need to write on it with liquid chalk.) Using your Resene testpot paintbrush, paint about three-quarters of the board in the main colour, marking it off with a strip of masking tape to provide a neat edge. When the paint is dry, apply a second coat.
When that is dry, tape and paint the upper part of your board towards the handle, using masking tape to mark off each section. Again, apply two coats of each Resene colour and leave to dry in between. Leaving some of the wood bare gives a nice contrast to the paintwork. When your stripes are dry, try adding dots and triangles in a different colour, using a fine brush. Freehand painting is easiest but you could tape your triangles if you prefer. Once all patterning is finished, set aside to dry completely.
The next step is to coat the boards with Resene Write-on Wall Paint. Following Resene’s instructions carefully, add total contents of Part B to Part A and mix thoroughly with a dedicated paint-stirring stick. Allow to stand undisturbed for five minutes before applying. DO NOT SHAKE MIXED MATERIAL. Apply an even coat in one direction. Try to avoid working back over areas that have begun to dry as this will lead to a patchy finish. Two coats are recommended – the second can be done two hours after the first coat. It may have a slight surface tack at this time but can be over-coated.
Leave boards in a dust-free area to cure for at least 48 hours.
Once set, bind the handles with some twine for added interest. If your board has no hole in the handle, create a hanging loop with the twine.
Note: Always use high-quality whiteboard markers, and a whiteboard eraser or soft cloth to clean. These boards are not intended for food use. Once painted, they are for decorative purposes only.
Resene tip: The mixed Resene Write-on Wall Paint will be enough to cover a number of boards or craft projects. It is a good idea to plan all your projects that will need this product so you can use the same can on all of them to save waste.
